Valedictory Ceremony of Eastern Region ICAR Sports Meet at NRRI

The Eastern Region ICAR Sports Meet concluded with a grand ceremony on 16th December 2023 marking the end of four days of intense competition and sportsmanship held at the playground at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack. A total of 579 competitors including 513 men and 66 women from 21 ICAR institutes located in east and northeast states of India participated in 17 different sports events in this four-day sports festival. The mega event and glittering function brought together athletes, spectators and supporters alike. Dr. P.K. Sahoo, Director, ICAR- Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Amaresh Kumar Nayak, Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack presided over the closing ceremony.
ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi bagged the coveted “Zonal Overall Championship Award” among the participating institutes while the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Barapani, Meghalaya became the “Runners-up” team in this sports meet. Shri Rakesh Kumar from ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres, KolKata received the “Best Athlete” title in men category while Dr. Bhagya Vijayan of National Research Centre on Litchi, Muzaffarpur, Bihar received the “Best Athlete” title in women category.
The NRRI, Cuttack received first positions in various team events like Cricket and Kabbadi. In individual category, first position in cycle race, Carom (Men and mixed doubles), High Jump (Male) and Table Tennis (Women Doubles).
The chief guest and other dignitaries awarded trophies and certificates to the winners of various sport events. While addressing the august gathering, he said that sport event allows employees to have fun and relieve stress, promoting healthier work habits. The Director, NRRI congratulated each participant for the success of the sports competition and said in his address that such sports events encourages healthy competition among teams that can boost motivation and productivity in the workplace.
Dr. M.J. Baig, chairman of the organizing committee presented welcome address and Dr. Pratap Bhattacharya, Secretary of the Organizing Committee presented a report of various events. Dr. Prashan K. Hanjagi, scientist offered formal vote of thanks.
