Training Program Conducted on 18.03.2025 “Engineered biochar complex for decontamination of phosphate and glyphosate in water”

A one-day training programme on “Engineered Biochar Complex for Decontamination of Phosphate and Glyphosate in Water” was conducted at ICAR-Central Rice Research Institute on 18.03.2025 under the Scientific Social Responsibility initiative of the SERB-funded project on “Engineered Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle-Biochar Complex for Decontamination of Phosphate and Glyphosate in Water.” Fourteen participants, including Assistant Professors, Ph.D. Scholars, and a Lab Assistant, attended the programme. The inaugural session was attended by Dr. Amaresh Kumar Nayak, Director, and Dr. Pratap Bhattacharyya, Head of the Crop Production Division at ICAR-CRRI. Dr. Nayak delivered an insightful talk on traditional biochar production methods and applications, followed by an overview of the training programme by Dr. Bhattacharyya. Technical sessions featured lectures by Course Directors Dr. Sushmita Munda and Dr. Rubina Khanam on “Biochar and its Role in Water Decontamination” and “Contaminant Removal from Water.” A practical session demonstrated biochar preparation using a muffle furnace and its effectiveness in phosphate and glyphosate removal. Participants were introduced to advanced analytical instruments, including Ultra-High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) and the UV-visible spectrophotometer. During the valedictory ceremony, participants highlighted “Water Decontamination Using Biochar” as an emerging research field and recommended longer-duration training programs, expressing particular interest in UPLC. The event concluded with the distribution of participation certificates.
