Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign-2019

Organisation of Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign-2019 and celebration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack from 11th September to 2nd October, 2019 

As per the direction of the Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, dated 31.08.2019 and necessary instruction of Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR, New Delhi, Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign-2019 along with celebration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (on 2.10.2019) was organized by ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha from 11.09.2019 to 02.10.2019 inside the Institute premises, its residential premises, schools and adopted villages. At the beginning of the program, Dr.A.K.Nayak, I/c Director offered floral tributes by garlanding the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Bose installed in the Reception of the Institute. After this, in the Conference Hall of the Institute, Dr.S.Lenka, Principal Scientist and Chairman, Swachh Bharat Committee apprised the house regarding the programme schedule of the various activities to be undertaken by the Institute Swachh Bharat Committee, where the Institute staff, students Project staff, contractual workers were present. Dr.A.K.Nayak, I/c Director deliberated on the importance of celebration of Swachh Hi Sewa-2019 campaign. He stressed on the celebration of SHS-2019 from 11.09.2019 to 02.10.2019, Swachh Bharat Diwas- as the focal point of the campaign with massive shramadan for plastic waste plastic waste management and to avoid use of Single Use Plastic (SUP). He administered the Swachhata pledge to all the presentees. The cleaning drive was undertaken at various places of NRRI campus including the residential premises during this period. On 25.09.19, a swachhata awareness program cum cleaning drive was undertaken in NRRI adopted village Chandol of Derabis block (Dist. Kendrapara) involving 120 farmers, farm women and other villagers in the presence of the Director of the institute Dr. H. Pathak; Dr. P.C. Rath, Head Crop Protection and Institute Swachh Bharat Committee members. The farmers were sensitized about the importance of cleanliness in their villages and the safe use of pesticides. The Institute Swachh Bharat Committee members made a round visit randomly from 26.09.2019 to 28.09.2019 and followed up of the cleanliness, safety of the laboratories, sitting rooms of Head of the Divisions, Scientists and other staff of Crop Improvement, Crop Production, Crop Physiology and Biochemistry, Crop Protection, Social Science including Administration, Finance, Library and ARIS Cell. The committee members found most of the rooms and labs being neat and clean, advised some concerned persons to keep their rooms/labs to maintain cleanliness and follow safety measures. On 1.10.2019, Swachhata awareness among the students of CRRI Govt. High School was held where the Director gave swachhata pledge to the students for maintaining cleanliness of the surrounding of their school and also their houses. Heads of the Divisions, Administration, and Finance stressed on the importance of “Swachhata” to the students and teachers. Cleaning drive was undertaken in the school premises.
The 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated on 2.10.2019 in the Conference Hall. In this program, Dr.Manoranjan Kar, ex-VC,OUAT, Bhubaneswar and Honourable Chief Guest of the occasion, addressed the staff members, students, Project staff, contractual workers of the Institute and farmers and opined that cleanliness comes from inner heart and all must strive to keep themselves and the surroundings clean. He mentioned that each and every individual must develop or change his attitude towards the overall cleanliness and beautification of the environment. One must make it a self learning process which will result into a healthy individual and a healthy society which Gandhiji had always dreamt of. Dr.S.K.Nayak, Working President,NRRI Pensioners’ Association and as the Guest of Honour stressed on “Swachhata” of the environment and also stated that many private institutions are celebrating it showing their devotion towards Gandhiji. Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director, ICAR-NRRI and Chairman of the function, made a heart touching presentation outlining the difference between us and Mahatma Gandhi. He spoke about the qualities of Gandhiji as an ordinary person and the effects of his simplicity that made him extraordinary. He mentioned that Gandhiji had sown the seeds of cleanliness in various places of the world. He was the torch-bearer of cleanliness. The Chief Guest Dr. Manoranjan Kar and Director, NRRI, Dr. H. Pathak gave away the awards to the participating staff, students, Project staff, contractual workers and retired personnel on the basis of competitions on “Best slogans on Gandhiji and Swachhata”. This function was very impressive, a grand success one, with large participation.
All the Swachh Bharat Committee members and staff, contractual workers of the Estate Management Section of the Institute were actively involved throughout the period of celebration of Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign- 2019 from 11.09.2019 to 2.10.2019, including the grand celebration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
