Second Indian Rice Congress (SIRC-2023) organized at ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack

Association of Rice Research Workers (ARRW), Cuttack organized the Second Indian Rice Congress (SIRC-2023) on the theme “Transforming Rice Research: Recent Scientific Developments and Global Food Crisis” during February 11-14, 2023 at ICAR- National Rice Research Institute (NRRI), Cuttack. Honourable President of India Shrimati Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Rice Congress on 11th February, 2023 in presence of Prof. Ganeshi Lal, Governor of Odisha; Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India; Shri Ranendra Pratap Swain, Minister of Agriculture, and Farmers’ Empowerment, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development, Government of Odisha; Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE) & Director General (DG), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); Dr. A.K. Nayak, Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack; Dr. P.K. Agrawal, ADG (TC) and President, ARRW and Dr. S. Saha, Organizing Secretary. The inauguration of this mega science conference was attended by about 500 participants comprising registered delegates, state officials, industry professionals, farmers and other stakeholders.

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Former Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE) & Director General (DG), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) delivered an evening lecture on ‘Nurturing Rice for Bountiful Harvest: New Paradigms for Sustainable Food Security’ on the 1st day and Prof. S.K. Datta, Former DDG (CS) and Vice Chancellor, Biswabangla Viswavidyalaya, Kolkata delivered an evening lecture on ‘Rice: Culture, Science and Politics’ on the 2nd day.

Keynote address were delivered by many eminent persons viz., Dr. S.K. Pradhan, ADG (FFC), ICAR on ‘Future of rice breeding in India’; Dr. A.K. Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior; Dr. U.S. Singh, Asia and Africa Advisor for Research & Partnership, IRRI India, New Delhi on ‘Current and emerging insect pests and diseases in rice and rice-based production system and their management through innovative approach’ and Dr. A.K. Singh, Vice Chancellor, Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (RLBCAU), Jhansi. Twenty lead lectures were delivered by invited speakers and 30 participants presented lightning talk (quick oral presentation). Participants also presented their research findings through posters.

The valedictory programme of the congress was held on 13 February 2023 which was graced by Dr. J.K. Roy, Former Joint Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack and Dr. S.K. Pradhan, ADG (FFC), ICAR as guests of honour. Dr. S. Saha, Organizing Secretary, ARRW welcomed the guests and briefed about the Congress. Dr. A.K. Nayak, Director, National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack gave special remarks about the Congress. Dr. P.K. Agrawal, President, ARRW presided over the function and Dr. Annie Poonam, Vice-President, ARRW proposed formal vote of thanks for the valedictory function.
