Observation of “19th Parthenium Awareness Week” at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack from 16-22 August, 2024

As per the direction from Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR, New Delhi and request from Director, ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack along with its Regional Station at Hazaribag (Jharkhand) organized 19th Parthenium Awareness Week- 2024 during 16-22 August 2024 to appraise the harmful effects of Parthenium hysterophorus (Carrot weed/congress grass/gajar ghas) and its management. A wide array of activities was conducted to spread maximum awareness among the staff members in order to keep the Institute campus Parthenium free under the national major activity of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. In the inaugural programme organized on 16th August, 2024, Dr. S. Lenka, Chairman, Institute Swachha Bharat committee detailed the importance of Parthenium Awareness Week and briefed about the weeklong activities that are to be carried out in the campus and SCSP adopted villages during 16-22 August 2024. During the Parthenium awareness week, Dr. Raghavendra Goud, Scientist (Agronomy) delivered a lecture on the topic “Harmful effects of Parthenium hysterophorus and its integrated management”. Dr. M. J Baig, Director (I/c) in his presidential remarks talked about the harmful effects of Parthenium, difficulties in controlling Parthenium weed and stressed about the need of uprooting the weed before flowering as an effective control measure. Swachhata cleaning drive for removal of Parthenium weeds was carried out in the premises of ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack on 17.08.2024, 18.08.2024 and 22.08.2024 with active involvement of staff, project staff, out sourcing staff and Institute Swachha Bharat Committee members to make the campus Parthenium free. Swachhata cleaning drive for removal of Parthenium weeds was carried out in the SCSP adopted village, Ainipur, Nischintakoili, Cuttack on 19.08.2024. With active involvement of villagers, Swachhata cleaning drive for removal of Parthenium weeds was carried out in the SCSP adopted villages, Paikona, Cuttack Sadar on 20.08.2024. The awareness on health hazards of the Parthenium weed and its management was created to the villagers by Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Scientist & chairman, SCSP and Dr. N. Jambhulkar, Senior Scientist, NRRI. Training and demonstration on management of Parthenium weeds for newly recruited technical and other technical staffs was conducted by Dr. Sushmita Munda, Senior Scientist (Agronomy) and Dr. Reshmi Raj K.R, Scientist (Genetics and Plant Breeding) on 21.08.2024 at Dr. Ramiah Conference Hall.
The Regional Station of the Institute, Central Rainfed Upland Rice Research Station (CRURRS), Hazaribag (Jharkhand) has also organized different activities during the period and significant activities were “Awareness, Parthenium uprooting” in SCSP village Bhelwatand, Hazaribagh; Gosthi on “Harmful effects of Parthenium & its management” in TSP adopted villages Kasira and Nawatoli, Khunti; Krushak Gosthi on “Harmful effects of Parthenium & its management” in AISECT University, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand and “Awareness & Parthenium uprooting” in the premises of this Regional Centre with the active involvement of Dr. N.P. Mandal, Head, CRURRS, Hazaribag, Dr. S.M. Prasad, PS (Agronomy), other scientists, staff including contractual workers, Project staff, students.
