KVK Cuttack celebrated World Soil Day 2017
KVK Cuttack, a unit of ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, organized World Soil Day awareness programme on the theme “Soils Caring for the Planet starts from the Ground” on 5th December, 2017. Dr. H. Pathak, Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack and Chief Guest of the programme discussed about the importance of restitution of nutrients into soil for maintenance of soil fertility and getting optimal production. He briefed the participants about different soil health parameters that they can take care of to ensure the fertility of soil. Dr. A.K. Nayak, Head, Crop Production Division elaborated the importance of the day. He advised to use soil health friendly technologies like vermicomposting, green manuring, use of customized leaf colour chart for nitrogen fertilizer application and use of recommended dose on basis of soil health card for caring the soil. Dr. P. Samal, Head, Social Science Division asked the farming community to take the benefit of Central Govt. flagship programme on Soil Health Card. A hundred no. of farmers/farmwomen/rural youth from all parts of Cuttack district actively participated in the programme. A leaflet on the theme of day provided by Ministry of Agriculture and translated into Odia was distributed among farmers along with a technical bulletin on ‘Soil health and its management’ during this programme. On this occasion, 200 Soil Health Cards were distributed among farmers of Ganeswarpur and Gudupada villages of Tangi Choudwar and Athagarh block, respectively.
On this occasion an interactive seminar-cum-workshop on ‘Soil Test and Fertilizer Recommendation’ and ‘Soil Health Management for Sustainable Productivity’ was conducted with expertise from ICAR-NRRI scientists and KVK experts. The farmers interacted with the scientists about their problems faced in soil fertility management and fertilizer application.
