The inaugural program of the “19th Parthenium Awareness Week” at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, was held on August 16, 2024. Organized by the Institute’s Swachha Bharat Committee, the event marked the beginning of a week-long initiative focused on raising awareness about the harmful effects of Parthenium hysterophorus, commonly known as Congress grass.
Dr. S. Lenka, Chairman of the Institute Swachha Bharat Committee, welcomed participants and outlined the activities planned for August 16-22, 2024. The program included a lecture by Dr. R. Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Scientist and Chairman of the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP), emphasized the need to educate farmers on the dangers of Parthenium and mentioned upcoming cleaning activities in SCSP-adopted villages as part of the awareness week.
In his presidential remarks, Dr. M.J. Baig, Director In-Charge, discussed the challenges of controlling Parthenium and urged the staff to remove the plant before it flowers, as this is the most practical approach to manage its spread.
