Farmers’ Training Programme on “Improved Package of Practices for Increasing Rice Productivity” (23-24 January, 2024)

A farmers’ training on “Improved Package of Practices for Increasing Rice Productivity” was conducted during January 23-24, 2024, at ICAR-NRRI Cuttack. The event, sponsored by Vedanta Ltd. through their implementing partner AFPRO for the Jivika Samridhi Project, aimed to empower local farmers with advanced agricultural practices. Fourteen farmers from Parmanpur, Kumudapalli, Keldamal, Gudigaon, Seriapalli, Kurebaga, and Katikela villages in Jharsuguda district participated in the program. The training was coordinated by Dr. Mohammad Shahid as the Course Director, with Dr. P.C. Jena and Dr. Upendra Kumar serving as Course Co-Directors. Dr. AK Nayak, Director of ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack chaired the inaugural session. Dr. Pratap Bhattacharyya, Head of CPD, also graced the program, emphasizing the significance of the initiative. The training sessions were designed to cover a comprehensive range of topics crucial for enhancing rice productivity. The lectures provided insights into various aspects, including rice varieties, crop management, nutrient management, disease management, rice insect-pests, farm machinery, and quality seed production. The training program also included field and farm visit along with a demonstration of small farm equipment, illustrating how modern machinery can significantly improve efficiency and reduce drudgery. An insightful visit to the Oryza museum enriched the farmers’ understanding of the historical and cultural aspects of rice cultivation. The combination of classroom lectures, field visits, and hands-on demonstrations ensured that participants gained practical insights into adopting sustainable and scientifically advanced farming methods.
