Farmers Pest Management Awareness–Cum-Drone Demonstration Programme in Rice Organized
ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack in association with Adarsha Prayas Foundation Trust organized Awareness and Demonstration Programme on Drone Application in Pest management in rice at Tunpur village of Salipur block in Cuttack district. Dr. Shyamaranjan Das Mohapatra, Head Crop Protection Division of the institute presided the programme and emphasized the non-chemical methods of pest management with the use of Solar 24 x 7 Insect Trap developed by the institute, augmentation of spiders by installing straw bundle charged with spiders, bud planting of flowering plants, pheromone traps. He also informed the farmers about the use of smart pest management tools like ricexpert app, drone based pest monitoring and pesticide application and stressed on low input pest management resources. Dr Basanna Gowda G, Scientist (Entomology) briefed about the use of biological control agents in rice insect pest management and also demonstrated the on-farm pesticide application through drone. Dr. Guru P. Pandi G Scientist (Entomology) highlighted the importance BPH resistant varieties viz. CR Dhan 317 and CR Dhan 805 developed by the institute and suggested them to grow in the BPH endemic areas of the block. Dr. Rupak Jena Scientist (Nematology) created awareness about nematodes problem in rice and its timely management. The team including Ekamra Kanan Padhan and Suryaprasad Lenka assisted in demonstration of pesticide application through drone. More than 100 farmers from the block participated and interacted with the NRRI scientists team. The farmers were impressed on the programme and requested the Head to organize such type of programme in future.
