Dr. Kutubuddin Molla from NRRI wins the INSA Young Scientist Award

Dr. Kutubuddin Molla, Scientist, Crop Improvement Division, has won the prestigious INSA medal for Young Scientist. The Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi provides this coveted award to highly promising young scientists chosen through a nationwide stringent competition and selection.
“The INSA Young Scientists Award, considered to be the highest recognition of promise, creativity, and excellence in a young scientist, is made annually to those distinguished for these attributes as evidenced by their research work carried out in India”. The award carries a Bronze Medal, a certificate, and an honorarium of Rs. 1 Lakh.
Dr. Molla has been awarded for his work on genome engineering and genome editing for developing rice plants suitable in the era of climate change.
He received the award during the 88th Anniversary General Meeting at Visakhapatnam from the INSA president Dr. Chandrima Saha on December 16, 2022. Due to the Covid lockdown, the award ceremony was postponed earlier.
Dr. Molla is currently working on developing novel genome editing tools and applying them to engineering rice plants for disease resistance and climate resilience. He hopes that someday those improved rice varieties benefit the farmers of Odisha and different parts of India.
