Campaign on ‘Nutri-Garden and Tree Plantation’ Initiated by ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack
As per directives from Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of India ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack organised a campaign on ‘Nutri-Garden and Tree Plantation’ on 17th September, 2021 at 2.30 PM to launch the ‘International Year of Millets-2023’. The resolution of the UN General Assembly entitled ‘International Year of Millets 2023’ sponsored by India and supported by more than 70 Nations. The main intention behind the initiative is to help Indian Millet farmers get decent returns by capitalising on their crop getting international recognition. Dr. Dipankar Maiti, Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack presided over the function and emphasized that India as the largest millet producer having potential to supplement nutritional requirement through millet based products. He also mentioned that most of the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) centered around food products of which millets as a major component. Dr. Padmini Swain, Head, Crop Physiology & Biochemistry Division graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour and addressed the gathering on the issue of ‘Nutrition and Women Health’. A key note speech on ‘Importance of plantation in the context of family nutrition and climate change’ was delivered by Dr. M.J. Baig, Chairman, Campus Development Committee. An awareness lecture on ‘Millets, Nutritional Garden and Energy Plantation for Sustainable Livelihood Security and Healthy Life’ was delivered by Dr. B.S. Satapathy, Scientist, Crop Production Division. On this occasion, vegetable seed kits and fruit saplings for nutritional garden were distributed by the dignitaries to the participants. Further, various millet based food products were displayed and distributed among the participants and guests.
Earlier, Dr. S.K. Mishra, Principal Scientist, and Convenor of this programme welcomed the guests and explained the objectives of the event. Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Scientist proposed vote of thanks. Around 80 farmers and farmwomen participated in this event.
