In continuation to organization of “Swachhata Pakhwada-2024 from 16-31 December, 2024 at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack; one Workshop on “Converting waste into wealth: Sustainable innovations for agriculture” was held on 17.12.2024 in Dr.P.K.Parija Auditorium in which Dr Rubina Khanam, Scientist, Crop Production Division & Member, Institute Swachh Bharat Committee was the speaker. At the outset, Dr.Srikanta Lenka, Chairman, Swachh Bharat Committee gave brief remarks on today’s workshop which will be beneficial for the Institute and its employees. Dr.Rubina Khanam highlighted on the concept of moving ‘beyond an age of waste’ which represents the vision of transforming the challenges of waste management into opportunities. It is about reimagining waste not as an end point but as a resource that fuels sustainable development. She discussed about the innovative approaches for waste utilization, real-world case studies and ongoing research that how waste can be repurposed to enrich soils, reduce emissions and boost productivity. She further emphasized that waste management is integral to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, touching on aspects like poverty alleviation, clean water, renewable energy, and sustainable cities. Industrial by-products like fly ash and basic slag have immense potential in agriculture. Fly ash improves soil texture and nutrient availability, while basic slag aids in neutralizing soil acidity and enhancing nutrient uptake. She showed the case studies of utilization of industrial wastes in agricultural sector. Dr GAK Kumar, Head, Social Science division, ICAR NRRI, Cuttack and the Chairman of today’s occasion gave emphasis not only on effective utilization of wastes, but also in reduction of waste generation. He further highlighted the need of public awareness for sustainable waste management. Dr.Reshmi Raj, Scientist & Convener of Swachh Bharat Committee offered vote of thanks to the Speaker and other presentees for successful organization of today’s workshop under Swachhata Pakhwada- 2024.
