Workshop on Genome Editing in Plants Held at ICAR-NRRI
The ICAR-National Rice Research Institute (ICAR-NRRI), Cuttack, successfully organized a workshop titled “Hands-on Training on Genome Editing in Plants for Basic Biology and Crop Improvement” from August 1-8, 2024. Sponsored by the DST-Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, the workshop saw active participation from 25 Ph.D. and 6 M.Sc. students from 23 reputed universities across the country.
The workshop was inaugurated on August 1, 2024, by the chief guest, Dr. Padmini Swain, former Director, ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack. Esteemed speakers and experts in genome editing from around the world delivered lectures and guided practical sessions. Participants gained comprehensive insights into various aspects of genome editing, including molecular biology basics, target gene selection, gRNA design, primer design, transformation, protoplast isolation, protoplast transfection, GFP visualization, Agrobacterium-mediated calli transformation, and advanced techniques such as base editing and prime editing.
As part of the workshop, participants engaged in brainstorming sessions and presented their findings in six different groups.
