ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack Marks International Day of Plant Health with Focus on Safe Trade and Digital Technology
ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack celebrated the International Day of Plant health (IDPH) on 12 May, 2024 under the theme “Plant health, Safe Trade, and Digital Technology”. Aligned with the United Nations’ designation of this day, the event underscored the vital importance of maintaining plant health to ensure food safety, secure trade, and foster sustainable economies and livelihoods. The celebration of the International Day of Plant Health took on a virtual dimension, drawing over 80 participants, including scientists from across the country. Head of the Crop Protection Division, Dr. S.D. Mohapatra, seized the opportunity to raise awareness about the crucial importance of plant health and its myriad benefits to both humans and the environment. Adding depth to the discussion, a special lecture was delivered by eminent entomologist Dr. Prabhuraj A, Head and Professor, UAS Raichur, Karnataka. Dr. Prabhuraj’s presentation on “eSAP- An ICT platform for crop health management” illuminated practical, field-based solutions for farmers to effectively manage plant health and enhance their economic prospects. In her address, Director (I/C), Dr. (Mrs.) Sanghamitra Samantaray underscored the profound significance of plants and their contribution to the economy and urged the participants to sensitize people and farmers around them about the critical importance of plant health for sustainable agricultural practices and economic prosperity.
