6th International Conference on Economic Development through Sustainable Agriculture Practices organized at NRRI
With a view to combat the challenges like feeding a growing population, providing a livelihood for farmers and protecting the environment which is intimately and inextricably related and which needs to be addressed simultaneously in order to make sustainable progress in agriculture, the Society for Agricultural Research & Management (SARM), Cuttack in collaboration with the ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack (NRRI) is organizing the 6th International Conference with a theme “Economic Development through Sustainable Agriculture Practices” from 19 to 21 January 2024 at its campus in Cuttack.
Dr. T.R. Sharma, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi graced the programme as chief guest and inaugurated the conference. Prof (Dr.) Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, New Delhi graced the occasion as the Special Guest while Prof. Pravat Kumar Roul, Vice Chancellor, Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Dr. A.K. Nayak, Director, ICAR-NRRI presided the conference.
About 500 scientists, eminent guests from different disciplines, speakers, entrepreneurs, experts and exhibitors from ICAR institutes and prestigious organizations of Govt. of India, state line department and farmers participated in this mega scientific event. The three-day long conference will witness seminar deliberations, panel discussions, workshops, plenary lectures, oral & poster presentations, farmers’ interaction, exhibitions etc.
The chief guest Dr. Sharma inaugurated the new Bio-fertilizer unit, birds & animal biodiversity unit and cafeteria inside the NRRI campus. He also visited the experimental plots and genomics laboratory. He laid emphasis on Publication, Patent, Process and Partnership and appreciated the efforts to fulfill the mandate set by the Council.
The chief guest while addressing the gathering spoke that Govt. of India is now focusing on scaling up agro ecology in India under its Vision 2047 plan aimed at improving farm output and income, helping India’s twin problems of a growing population and the demand for feeding through higher and sustainable agricultural production while mitigating the impact of existing farm techniques on climate and soil health.
The Director, NRRI said that the Institute which already had developed 179 high yielding rice varieties including climate resilient, biofortified and herbicide resistant varieties is now fully committed to promote sustainable agronomic practices, reducing methane emissions, enhancing carbon sequestration, and influencing policies that support climate-smart agriculture which are all part of Sustainable Development Goals as envisaged by the UN and endorsed by GOI and the Council.
In the beginning of the programme, Dr. M.J. Baig, Convenor, AGRIVISION-2024 welcomed all the dignitaries while Er. Dibyanshu Prasad Das, Program Director offered vote of thanks.
