ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack organized National Brainstorming Workshop on Integrated Pest Management: Challenges and Way Forward (WinPest – 2023)

ICAR-National Rice Research Institute organized National Brainstorming Workshop on Integrated Pest Management: Challenges and Way Forward (WinPest – 2023) on 11th October 2023 at Cuttack. Prof. Sanjay Kumar Nayak, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Ravenshaw University, Cuttack was Chief Guest in the inaugural session. In his inaugural speech he emphasized on agro chemicals, fertilizers and adoption of bio-based technologies in IPM and voiced the slogans Think Green and Go Green, Say Yes to Plastic but No to Littering.
Dr Amaresh Kumar Nayak, Director of the institute and Chairman of the workshop highlighted the conservation of agro-ecosystem and use safer IPM components under cultural, biological and chemical methods.
Dr. Mukund Variar, Guest of Honour & State Coordinator, IRRI Odisha emphasized on the zero tolerance to high risk pesticides and the agro-chemicals which should be last resort to pest management.
Dr S D Mohapatra, Convenor of the workshop in his welcome address highlighted the need of the brainstorming workshop and told the workshop indents to dissect the adoption of IPM, its bottlenecks and way forward to secure food and nutritional security.
Brainstorming workshop featured two technical sessions viz. Lead lectures and Panel Discussion. Lead lecture session was chaired by Dr. Hari C Sharma, Former Vice Chancellor, YSPUHF, Solan. There were seven lead lectures delivered by Dr. Subash Chander, Director, ICAR-NCIPM; Dr. Y.G. Prasad, Director, ICAR-CICR; Dr. H. C. Sharma, Former VC, Dr YSPUHF; Dr. M Variar, State Coordinator, IRRI-Odisha, Dr. M.R. Khan, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IARI; Dr. Manoj Semwal, Sr Principal Scientist, CIMAP and Dr. Deo Mishra, Plant health Risk Management Head, Bayer Crop Science. The major areas covered in the deliberations are IPM Scenario in India, adoption of surveillance and forecasting for successful pest management, host plant resistance, advances in plant disease diagnosis and monitoring, nematode management in IPM, remote sensing and digital innovations: transforming IPM and tailored pest management.
Seven panelists namely Dr. Subash Chander, Director, ICAR-NCIPM; Dr S N Sushil, Director, ICAR-NBAIR, Dr C Chattopadhyay, Former VC, UBKV and presently Pr Scientist, CRIJAF, Bud Bud, Dr. Manoj Semwal, Sr Principal Scientist, CIMAP and Dr. Deo Mishra, Plant health Risk Management Head, Bayer Crop Science Mr R K Warrier, Regional Director, BAIF, one progressive farmers participated in panel discussion which was chaired by Dr. AK Nayak, Director of the institute.
The panel discussion stressed on the monitoring and surveillance, functional agro advisory sectors, timely and quality IPM input supply, formulating norms for supply of quality bio-agent, and regulatory standards, 4A principle (Awareness, Availability, Accessibility, and Affordability) in order to enhance adoption of IPM practices.
Dr. Guru P Pandi G, Organizing Secretary of the WinPest 2023 proposed vote of thanks. A total of 160 Participants attended the workshop including 135 were attended the physically and 25 participated virtually.
