Rashtriya Mahila Kisan Divas organized at ICAR-NRRI

ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack organized “Rashtriya Mahila Kisan Divas

Farmer FIRST Programme of the ICAR-National Rice Research Institute and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Cuttack jointly organized the “Rashtriya Mahila Kisan Divas” programme on 15th October, 2018 at ICAR-NRRI Campus. Above 120 farmwomen along with women scientists and staff of NRRI, scientists from other ICAR institutes, senior officers of line departments and media persons actively participated in this programme. Chairing the function, Dr A.K. Nayak, Director (I/C), ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack emphasized on development, awareness and extensive use of farmwomen-friendly and drudgery-reducing agricultural technologies and implements to empower themselves and ensure their nutritional security. He also mentioned about the genuine need for proper technical and societal backstopping for the farmwomen in showcasing their inert potentialities in both farm and home.

ICAR-NRRI Emeritus Scientist and former Head of Crop Protection Division Dr Mayabini Jena emphasized on requirement for farmwomen’s education, health and nutrition for their holistic development. Dr GAK Kumar, Head, Social Science Division emphasized on the role of women in agriculture and family empowerment. Dr Sanghamitra Samantaray, Principal Scientist and Chairperson, Women Cell of the institute and Smt. Sandhyarani Mallick, a leading woman activist interacted with the farmwomen for improving their income by discussing about adoption of sustainable and proven women friendly technologies. Some selected farmwomen shared their farming experiences for achieving their dream of self reliance, which inspired all the participants. Vegetable seed kits on nutritional garden were provided to all the women participants.

On this occasion, a Quiz was held on agriculture to create awareness about the agricultural practices, health, food and nutritional security among all the farm women, in addition to the colorful Rangoli competition, where about 30 farmwomen took active participation. Ten best woman farmers were also felicitated by the Director on the occasion to recognize their contributions in different farm activities in addition to their normal domestic chores. The participants went home with enthusiasm for achieving more for self and family empowerment.

Dr S.K. Mishra, Principal Scientist, PI of NRRI-Farmer FIRST Project and the Organizing Secretary welcomed the dignitaries and briefed about importance of the day as well as gender specific activities of NRRI for women empowerment. The programme ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr D.R. Sarangi, Officer-in-Charge, KVK, Cuttack.
