ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack organizes National Workshop on “Rice research and development for doubling farmers’ income” 

The ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha and Directorate of Rice Development, Patna, Bihar jointly organized the National Workshop 2020 – “Rice research and development for doubling farmers’ income” at NRRI, Cuttack on 28th February 2020. The National Workshop was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Dr. PK Agrawal, Vice Chancellor, O.U.A.T., Bhubaneswar and the Guest of Honour, Dr. AP Singh, Additional Commissioner, Department of Agriculture Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, GoI.
The Chief Guest, Dr. PK Agrawal, Vice Chancellor, O.U.A.T., Bhubaneswar stressed upon the need for following the system approach involving productive and resilient rice varieties, improved low cost production practices to meet the demand for food grain and at the same time, the upliftment of the socio-economic condition of Indian rice growers. He emphasized on the use of advanced technology and techniques in the farmers’ field to achieve the aim of doubling the farmers’ income.Dr. AP Singh, Additional Commissioner, DAC & FW, GoI highlighted the significant contribution of rice to the national GDP. He stressed upon active involvement of extension functionaries and researcher in technology transfer. He also emphasized on farmer-market linkage and cold chain management to reduce the post-harvest losses.
The dignitaries also inaugurated the “Agricultural Exhibition” organized on the eve of workshop in the NRRI quadrangle showcasing new varieties, production technologies and different value-added products from rice in various stalls by SAU and different ICAR institutes.
The workshop consisted of a total of five sessions viz; Inaugural, three technical sessions and a plenary session where seven invited lectures were delivered by eminent scientists on rice varietal improvement, production, protection, farm mechanization, post harvest and value addition, transfer of technology and growth trends of farmers income. In the plenary session an open discussion was made on the issues and constraints associated in rice production of different states. Over 150 delegates including scientists and senior officials from state departments of agriculture, crop directorates, ICAR institutes, KVKs, Deans of SAUs and BGREI nodal officers attended the one-day National workshop.
In the inaugural session, Dr. D. Maiti, Director, ICAR- NRRI, Cuttack delivered the welcome address, Dr. Virendra. Singh, Director, DRD, Patna briefed about the workshop and Dr. BB Panda, Organizing secretary of the workshop proposed the formal vote of thanks to the chair.
The dignitaries also released the Souvenir of the National Workshop on “Rice research and development for doubling farmers’ income” on the occasion.
