INVITED TALK SESSION ON “WASTE TO WEALTH’ UNDER “SWACHHA BHARAT ABHIYAN” BY MRS.ANANYA DAS, IAS, COMMISSIONER, CUTTACK MUNICIPAL CORPORATION ON 25/05/2022 ICAR-NRRI, CUTTACK

One Invited talk on “Waste to Wealth’ delivered by Mrs.Ananya Das, IAS, Commissioner, Cuttack Municipal Corporation under Swachha Bharat Abhiyan and Chief Guest on this occasion was organized by Institute Swachha Bharat Committee in the Dr.K.Ramiah Conference Hall at ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack under the chairmanship of Dr.(Mrs.) Padmini Swain, Director (A), ICAR-NRRI at 4.00 pm on 25th May, 2022. Ms. Sanjibeeta Roy, Deputy Commissioner, CMC graced in the above occasion as Guest of Honour. In this occasion Heads of different Divisions/Sections, Sr. Administrative Officer, Sr.Finance & Accounts Officer, Institute Swachha Bharat Committee members, Scientists, Officers, other staffs, students, Project staffs etc. joined in this session with larger participation.
At the outset Dr. S.Lenka, Chairman, Institute Swachha Bharat Committee put forth a brief note before the dignitaries and august house on wide array of swachhata activities being carried out by ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack. Mrs. Ananya Das, Commissioner, CMC in her impressive and nice invited talk on ‘Waste to Wealth’ informed the august house about the difficulties faced by the CMC initially due to social structure embedded in Cuttack City. Initially people were reluctant to follow the advisories about the segregation of waste, but slowly the participation of city dwellers (sahi people) increased in disposing the waste and handing over the waste to ‘Waste collecting vehicles’. CMC is also working for upliftment of transgenders, creating employment opportunities them, and rehabilitation of poor kids living in slums. She also stressed and advised that NRRI should work towards making its campus “Zero waste campus” which may prove as a role model for not only Odisha but also for the whole country.
Ms.Sanjibeeta Roy, Deputy Commissioner, CMC in this session as Guest of Honour informed the gathering about the solid and liquid waste management strategies adopted by CMC. She also informed that how the solid waste is being converted into good quality compost which are being sold and being a source of generating wealth. Some of the liquid and toxic waste when converted into compost are not suitable for agricultural land, but may be used for forestry and other such uses involving non-edible plants and trees.
Dr.Padmini Swain, Director (A) & Chairperson of the session informed the guests about the research and other significant activities being carried out by NRRI.
The Invited talk session was moderated by Dr.Rahul Tripathy, Member, ISBC with ‘Vote of thanks’ given by Dr.N.N.Jambhulkar, Member, ISBC.
