• The typical sheath rot symptoms were observed in research farm of NRRI and ten farmer’s fields of Cuttack district, Odisha.
• The pathogen was produced an abundant single celled, oval shaped microcondia (5.5-9 × 1.5-2 μm), whereas macrocondia were not produced.
• The pathogen was characterized at molecular level using ITS, alpha elongation factor gene (EF1-α), RNA polymerase II largest-subunit gene (RPB2), calmodulin gene (cld) and a species-specific primer for F. proliferatum.
• Morphological characters, pathogenicity test and molecular characterization have identified the pathogen as Fusarium proliferatum.
