Field Day-cum-Rice IPM Awareness Programme organized in Odisha 

The ICAR-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack in collaboration with ICAR-National Centre for Integrated Pest Management, New Delhi jointly organized a “Field Day and IPM Awareness Programme” under NRRI-NCIPM Collaborative Project at Santoshpur village of Basta Block in Balasore district on 27th November 2019 and Aruha village of Pipili block in Puri District of Odisha.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Kailash Chandra Parida, Chief District Agriculture Officer of Balasore District highlighted the importance of seed treatment, soil health card, mechanization in minimising the cost of Pest Management in raising good crop. He stressed on the need for adopting the pest resistant varieties with high yielding attributes for minimising the pest.
Addressing to the farmers, Dr. S D Mohapatra, Principal Scientist (Entomology), ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack and Principal Investigator of the Project briefed about the various IPM activities undertaken including training imparted to the farmers on correct identification of insect pests, diseases, natural enemies, tools of rice IPM and safe use of pesticides through Farmers Field Schools organized during crop period. He also emphasized the use of digital tool like “RiceXpert” app developed by the institute for effective management of rice insect pests and diseases.
Dr Sunil Mohapatra, Senior Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Balasore briefed about the on-going activities of the centre and narrated success stories on the management of brown plant hopper in rice, fruit and shoot borer in brinjal.
Dr R K Tanwar, Principal Scientist (Entomology) from ICAR-NCIPM, New Delhi stressed on the use of non-chemical means of pest management tools in rice pest management. Dr Satyendra Singh of NCIPM, New Delhi highlighted the loss incurred due to nematode in rice and its holistic management. Dr S Lenka, Principal Scientist (Plant Pathology) of the institute and Dr B S Satapathy, Scientist (Agronomy) briefed about the low-cost methods of rice diseases and weed management in rice respectively.
Smt Anamika Das Mohapatra, Sarapanch and Smt Sanjukta Pradhan, Block Member attended the meeting and appreciated the efforts made by the institute on rice IPM.
More than 120 farmers from different villages of Basta Block of Balasore and 50 farmers of Pipili Block participated in the field days and IPM Awareness meet.
