Dr. Sanghamitra Samantaray Honored with Prestigious Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award 2023
Dr. Sanghamitra Samantaray, Principal Scientist and Head of the Crop Improvement Division at ICAR-Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, has been honored with the prestigious Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award for 2023 in the category of Life Science by the Odisha Bigyan Academy, Science & Technology Department, Government of Odisha. The award was presented at Lok Seva Bhawan Convention Hall, Bhubaneswar, on March 28, 2025, by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Mohan Charan Majhi in the presence of Shri Krushna Chandra Patra, Hon’ble Minister, Science & Technology Department; Smt. Chithra Arumugam, IAS, Principal Secretary, Science & Technology Department; and Smt. Anu Garg, IAS, Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary. This recognition highlights Dr. Samantaray’s outstanding contributions to agricultural research and rice biotechnology. Her notable innovations include the development of a method for albino-free shoot regeneration in rice through anther culture, which has accelerated rice breeding programs, quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, and multiple trait introgression. Additionally, she has contributed to the development of nutri-dense rice varieties and rice hybrids.
